The Hamburger Mold

Hey Everybody,

Over the past couple of weeks I have been working a lot with the compression molding machine. In the search for cheap, quick & easy molding techniques that are replicable and useful for the community I have experimented with what I call, the Hamburger Mold.

Concept is simple, you have a wooden middle layer with the wanted shape and two metal plates to transfer the heat and pressure.

Pros: quick to prototype, quite precise, easy release.
Cons: not ideal to cool in water, only 2-dimensional objects, if using MDF or plywood the glue might burn before plastic melts releasing toxic fumes.

Looks great @mattia-io!
I will definitely give this a go!

Did you apply pressure while the mold was in the oven or was the weight of the metal rod sufficient?

I think this would be a great option because wood is so easily routed. And the wood could even be swapped out of the metal casing for different designs…
Maybe you could even stack several of these molds on top of each other to get several molds done at once?

Awesome stuff!

That’s an ingenious technique, and looks much simpler than using an injection approach
