Based on a forum post (can’t find it anymore for some reason), I was inspired to build the following Motor Torque/Plastic Matrix. This was primarily constructed to help folks figure out what motor torque they need in order to shred a specific plastic type and thickness.
Folks with shredders… I could use some help filling it out.
Hi Rob, the 20 and 60Nm values you’ve filled in I think were originally from a post I made, which has since been quoted out of context. Just to clarify, these were tests I made on my shredder by hand to determine what size motor I’d need. My shredder is a different design to the Dave Hakkens one (twin shaft) and much smaller, with cutters about half the diameter. Since fitting a motor I’ve also found that 60Nm is not the worst case scenario and I need at least 75Nm when the cutters are packed full. I don’t think my figures can be reliably extrapolated, but I would at least double them. I would guess a good working figure for the DH shredder would be 150Nm, less than that and you are likely to get jams. The motor/gearbox in the shredder BOM is capable of 270Nm.
Thanks for the detail. I’ll update the matrix. Note: If you have done more tests and have numbers, please don’t hesitate to add them to the wiki. You should be able to login and edit the page.
